Buying insurance without asking the right questions is like buying a car without test driving it. You might get lucky, but you might also end up with something that doesn't meet your needs.

Before you sign any insurance policy, make sure you get clear answers to these five questions.

1. "What Exactly Is Covered - and What Isn't?"

This seems obvious, but it's where most surprises happen. Don't assume your policy covers something just because it seems like it should. Ask your agent to walk through the coverage in detail, including exclusions.

Pay special attention to scenarios that are commonly excluded: floods, earthquakes, home business equipment, certain dog breeds, and specific medical procedures.

2. "What Happens If I Need to File a Claim?"

Before you buy, understand the claims process. Ask:

A policy is only as good as the company's willingness to honor it. Check J.D. Power claims satisfaction scores and online reviews.

3. "Am I Getting All Available Discounts?"

Insurance companies offer numerous discounts, but they don't always apply them automatically. Specifically ask about: multi-policy, loyalty, safe driver, good student, low mileage, home security, smoke-free, claims-free, and professional organization discounts.

4. "What Would Happen If I Had a Major Loss?"

Run through a worst-case scenario with your agent. If your house burned down, would your policy cover rebuilding at today's construction costs? If you caused a serious car accident, would your liability coverage be enough? If you were diagnosed with a major illness, what would your out-of-pocket costs be?

This exercise often reveals gaps that aren't obvious from looking at coverage limits alone.

5. "How Does This Compare to Other Options?"

Never buy the first policy you're quoted. Ask your agent to show you comparable options from other carriers. Even if the coverage looks similar, the price can vary significantly.

And remember: cheapest isn't always best. A slightly more expensive policy with better claims service and fewer exclusions can save you money in the long run.

The Right Agent Makes All the Difference

A good insurance agent doesn't just sell you a policy - they help you understand it. If an agent can't or won't answer these questions clearly, find one who will.
